This page is inspired by a recent conversation with someone who isn't even thirty years old. Like all of us, he has been inundated with a steady drumbeat of attack ads in this current election cycle. He said, "It seems like all of them want us to lose hope in our future and just give up. Like we shouldn't believe in ourselves and blindly follow them"
This page is for all those who feel that way. We'll show you how to feel empowered with a few easy actions. The courage of youthful enthusiasm combined with the experience of those of us....not so youthful, is an unbeatable combination.
It is also a continuation of our site theme about always being accountable and about simplifying leadership development. The young guy quoted in the first paragraph sees the challenge. Part of our goal is to help people become empowered for life, and empowered for excellence. Our page directory offers some specific tools for overcoming obstacles, and for working with people.
"Feed them on your dreams. The one they pick's the one you'll know by..."
This is past simply blocking out any negative words or deeds. Blocking them is fine, but being empowered for life means looking deeper. Question the motives, and question the answers. Then decide how you will become empowered to change things.
In our house, we changed our morning activity. We watch the local news to get an idea of the weather and then we turn off the television. The barrage of negative ads is wasting time and is the opposite of empowered. It is mind-numbing at best, anger and stress producing at worst.
Replace that wasted time with a good book and some positive input. Better yet, follow the next steps and you will model how to feel empowered for everyone who meets you.
Take some of that time you're saving and invest in yourself instead. We already suggested positive affirmations. Be sure you are removing yourself from toxic relationships. If you feel bad about something every time, it's time to get rid of it. Take the dog for a walk, exercise, and look into how you will go forward with number four on this list.
On every airline in the world, they give a similar message. "In the unlikely event of loss of cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will drop down in front of you. Secure your own mask before attempting to help someone else." This isn't about being selfish. It's about being personally strong so you are able to help other people. Physical health and mental health work in tandem. Don't skimp on either one.
"Leading well is not about enriching yourself - it's about empowering others." John C. Maxwell
We use the word "ally" as a verb in this section. Regular readers know that one of our editors is not a people person. That editor will tell you from experience that isolation can breed negativity.
Quiet time alone is a good thing. It allows us the opportunity to clear our minds and work on the next action step that will help us with how to feel empowered. But we are stronger as a united team than we can ever be in a solo effort. Hanging out with positive people increases empowerment.
"The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly."
Jim Rohn
You'll be empowered for excellence when you make every day an opportunity to do something great. Great doesn't always mean something big. Small things done over and over add up to big things. We are placed on this earth to do things, not to just exist in a small window of time.
We talk about how to hold someone accountable. The best way to do that is to show them how to be accountable. Our purpose in life, done with passion will show them. And always remember, if you start something, finish it. There are plenty of starters, but far fewer who go the distance and finish the job.
"And you, of tender years, can't know the fears your elders grew by. Help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die..."
Life isn't always easy, but the alternative is worse. Take a few minutes each day, regardless of how tough it was the day before and be grateful for what did go right. Writing that last line reminds me that I've had to look hard on some of those days to find that good thing, but it's there.
Being grateful is a certain method of showing you how to feel empowered. It will energize you to move forward as you work passionately on your purpose as an accountable citizen.
"When you focus on problems, you get more problems. When you focus on possibilities, you have more opportunities."
Zig Ziglar
In our editorial room, we think empowered means to be aware of what is happening in our world, to see through the charade of the two-headed monster that controls our national politics and to blow past the negative.
It means to be grateful for our gifts and to use them everyday to make things better. It means we take care of ourselves emotionally and physically.
It means we exude positive possibilities for people. We don't see things through rose-colored glasses, but we also don't let the negative cause us to lose hope.
We've shared a few lyrics in various quote blocks from an old song written by Graham Nash. Just below is that song.
